Neuroscientist Greg Gage puts electrodes on a volunteer's forearm and pipes the crackle of her firing motor neurons through a speaker — you're hearing a brain drive a muscle in real time. Then he raises the stakes: a second volunteer, wired into the same rig. When she clenches her fist, her signal jumps the gap and fires his arm. His hand moves without his permission.
