The Birds Were Sitting on a Wire. He Saw a Song.

A photo of birds on a wire became sheet music — and the melody they accidentally composed is genuinely beautiful.

Backstory

One morning in 2009, Brazilian artist Jarbas Agnelli opened his newspaper and saw a photo of birds sitting on five electric wires. Five wires — the same number of lines as a musical staff. So he cut out the photo, sat down at his piano, and played the birds exactly where they perched, curious what melody they’d written without knowing it.

The tune that came out is delicate and a little haunting — and he never moved a single bird. When he tracked down the photographer, Paulo Pinto, to ask for the original, he got back an uncropped version with more birds than the paper had printed — so he had extra notes, and extended the song to match.

Watch the notes light up on the wires as the melody plays. Nothing here is arranged for effect except the arrangement itself.
